Netflix Scores Big with New Sports Documentary: “Staley: Built Different” Chronicles the Legendary Career of Dawn Staley
April 22, 2025 – Los Angeles, CA — Netflix has announced a groundbreaking new sports documentary, “Staley: Built Different”, set to premiere globally on May 17. The five-part series offers an intimate and inspirational look at the life and career of Dawn Staley — a trailblazer in women’s basketball as both a Hall of Fame player and a national championship-winning coach.
Directed by Ava DuVernay and produced by SpringHill Entertainment, “Staley: Built Different” follows Staley’s journey from the streets of North Philadelphia to Olympic gold, WNBA greatness, and collegiate coaching glory. The documentary weaves together archival footage, exclusive behind-the-scenes access, and candid interviews with teammates, players, and rivals.
“This isn’t just a basketball story. It’s a story about perseverance, leadership, and changing the game — on and off the court,” DuVernay said in a press statement.
The series opens with Staley’s early years, highlighting the grit and determination that fueled her rise as a point guard at the University of Virginia and later as a six-time WNBA All-Star. Episodes then shift to her coaching career at Temple and ultimately at the University of South Carolina, where she built a dynasty and became the first Black woman to win multiple NCAA titles as a head coach.
The third episode, “The Standard,” focuses on her mentorship style, her impact on the next generation of women athletes, and her vocal advocacy for gender and racial equity in sports. The final episode culminates in her 2024 Olympic run as head coach of Team USA, showcasing her full-circle moment on basketball’s biggest stage.
With guest appearances from legends like Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird, and A’ja Wilson, “Staley: Built Different” is already generating Emmy buzz for its powerful storytelling and cinematic depth.
“Coach Staley didn’t just build a program — she built a movement,” said Wilson in the trailer.
“Staley: Built Different” premieres May 17 on Netflix.
