A newly signed offensive weapon for the New York Jets recently opened up about what made the team stand out during free agency—and according to him, the decision was driven by more than just football.
Veteran wide receiver Mike Williams, who joined the Jets this offseason after spending his entire career with the Los Angeles Chargers, cited a “special” and personal reason for signing with New York: his connection to quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Williams expressed admiration for Rodgers and described the opportunity to play alongside a future Hall of Famer as a major influence in his choice.
Speaking with reporters, Williams said, “I wanted to be part of something great. Playing with Aaron Rodgers is something you dream of as a receiver. He’s one of the best to ever do it, and I feel like our skill sets really complement each other.” Williams added that having a quarterback like Rodgers not only enhances a receiver’s productivity but also elevates the team’s overall potential.
The Jets made a concerted effort to boost their offense heading into the 2025 season, particularly after Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in the very first game of the 2023 season. His injury derailed the team’s playoff hopes, but now with his expected return and the addition of playmakers like Williams, the Jets believe they can contend in a competitive AFC.
Williams, known for his ability to win contested catches and stretch the field, brings a physical presence to New York’s receiving corps. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing over 215 pounds, he’s expected to serve as a reliable target, especially in red-zone situations. When healthy, Williams has proven to be a difference-maker. In 2022, he recorded over 850 receiving yards and four touchdowns, and in his 2021 season, he notched a career-best 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns.
Another factor in his decision to join the Jets was the team’s clear vision and direction. “They had a plan, and I wanted to be part of it,” Williams said. He praised head coach Robert Saleh for building a culture of accountability and competitiveness, and he expressed confidence in offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett’s system, which he believes will maximize his strengths as a receiver.
The Jets’ front office has been aggressive in building a roster around Rodgers, adding veteran talent and shoring up the offensive line. Williams’ addition complements young star Garrett Wilson, forming a dangerous one-two punch at wide receiver. The duo gives Rodgers the kind of dynamic options he needs to distribute the ball and keep defenses guessing.
Beyond football, Williams mentioned how the New York market and the team’s fan base factored into his decision. “This is one of the biggest stages in sports,” he said. “You want to shine under the bright lights, and I’m ready for that.”
Williams is also motivated to prove himself after an injury-shortened 2023 season in which he tore his ACL. Now fully recovered, he’s eager to show he can return to top form and be a reliable piece in New York’s offensive puzzle.
The Jets see Williams not just as a short-term fix but as a potential long-term contributor if he stays healthy. With Rodgers back under center, a bolstered receiving unit, and a motivated team around him, Williams believes the Jets have all the pieces in place to make a playoff run—and he’s excited to be a part of it.
“I came here to win,” Williams said. “This team is built to do something special.”
