The Providence College (PC) men’s basketball team has been actively utilizing the transfer portal to rebuild its roster, securing four new players in recent weeks. The latest addition is Jaylin Sellers, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard with one season of eligibility remaining. Sellers transfers from the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he led the team in scoring during the 2023-24 season, averaging 15.9 points per game. Prior to his time at UCF, Sellers played two seasons at Ball State University. An injury limited his participation to just three games in the 2024-25 season.
Another significant recruit for the Friars is Stefan Vaaks, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound guard from Tabasalu, Estonia. Vaaks will join PC as a freshman for the 2025-26 season. He showcased his skills in the 2024 FIBA Europe Cup, averaging 14.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Vaaks also played for BC Kalev/Carmo in the Latvia-Estonia Basketball League during the 2024-25 season, posting averages of 15 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. PC Head Coach Kim English expressed enthusiasm about Vaaks’ commitment, highlighting his skill set and dedication to the game.
In contrast, the University of Rhode Island (URI) men’s basketball team faces challenges, having lost over 95% of its scoring from the previous season. The top returning scorer averaged just 2.8 points per game, and as of now, URI has not secured any players from the transfer portal to bolster its roster.
The transfer portal continues to significantly influence college basketball rosters, with both PC and URI navigating its impacts as they prepare for the upcoming season.
