The Cincinnati Reds have bolstered their pitching roster by claiming right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Texas Rangers.
Contreras, 25, was once a top-100 prospect with the Pittsburgh Pirates, showcasing significant potential early in his career.
He began his professional journey with the New York Yankees, signing as an international free agent in 2016. In January 2021, he was traded to the Pirates as part of the deal for Jameson Taillon.
Contreras made his MLB debut with the Pirates in September 2021, delivering a promising performance. In the 2022 season, he appeared in 21 games, achieving a 5–5 record with a 3.79 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 95 innings. However, the 2023 season presented challenges, as he struggled to a 3–7 record and a 6.59 ERA across 19 appearances.
In May 2024, the Pirates designated Contreras for assignment, leading to his acquisition by the Los Angeles Angels. With the Angels, he found some stability, posting a 2.33 ERA over 37 appearances. Later that year, the Texas Rangers claimed him off waivers, but he was designated for assignment again in December.
The Reds’ decision to claim Contreras reflects their strategy to enhance pitching depth by investing in players with high potential. Contreras’ versatility allows him to function both as a starter and a reliever, providing the Reds with valuable flexibility in their pitching lineup.
While Contreras has faced inconsistencies in his performance, his early career success and underlying talent suggest he could be a valuable asset if he regains his form. The Reds are optimistic that a change of environment and coaching can help him realize his potential, contributing positively to their pitching staff in the upcoming season.
This move aligns with the Reds’ broader efforts to strengthen their roster through strategic acquisitions, aiming to build a competitive team for the future.
