In 2021, the University of Southern California (USC) had to issue a formal apology after their student section used inappropriate language during a football game against BYU. In another instance in 2022, officials from the University of Oregon publicly apologized for “despicable chants” aimed at BYU fans and the Latter-day Saint faith during a game at Autzen Stadium. These events reveal a troubling pattern of behavior that continues to draw scrutiny and condemnation.
The actions of Providence College students have drawn comparisons to these past incidents, underscoring the need for schools to address such behavior and foster greater understanding and respect within their athletic programs and fan communities.
