Keith Hackett reacts to Jayden Bogle controversy in Leeds vs Tottenham

Jayden Bogle was fortunate to escape a red card during Leeds United’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, following a controversial challenge on Mathys Tel that has sparked considerable debate.

The encounter at Elland Road was closely contested when the Leeds right-back caught the Tottenham winger with his standing leg in what appeared to be a dangerous challenge. Despite the severity of the contact and Tel remaining on the ground for an extended period, referee John Brooks decided against showing Bogle a yellow or red card.

The decision was subsequently reviewed by VAR official Tony Harrington, who concluded that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the referee’s original decision. Bogle was therefore allowed to continue, although Tel was unable to recover from the injury and was substituted in the 43rd minute.

Former FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett has now delivered his assessment of the controversial incident, and his comments have raised further questions about the officials’ decision.

Keith Hackett delivers brutal verdict on Jayden Bogle challenge

Hackett strongly disagrees with the decision to allow Bogle to remain on the pitch, insisting that the Leeds defender should have received a straight red card for his challenge on Tel.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News after watching the footage, the former referee made his position clear.

He said: “This challenge should have resulted in a red card for serious foul play.”

Hackett also dismissed suggestions that the incident was simply an unfortunate accident involving a player attempting to win the ball.

He explained that Bogle’s actions went beyond an ordinary challenge, arguing that the defender made contact with the back of Tel’s Achilles without making a genuine attempt to play the ball.

His assessment has added another layer to the controversy surrounding the officiating during Saturday’s encounter.

However, Bogle ultimately escaped punishment and remained on the pitch, much to the relief of Leeds manager Daniel Farke and his team.

Why Tottenham could also have received a red card

Interestingly, the controversial Bogle incident was not the only moment that attracted attention during the match, as Tottenham also had a potential disciplinary issue involving Pedro Porro.

The Spanish defender had already been booked when he committed another foul on Lukas Nmecha near the edge of the penalty area in the 59th minute.

Given that Porro was already on a yellow card, there were suggestions that Brooks could have issued a second booking and sent the Tottenham defender off.

Consequently, both teams arguably had reasons to feel aggrieved by the refereeing decisions, with either side potentially finishing the contest with ten players.

Nevertheless, Brooks and VAR official Harrington stood by their respective decisions, allowing the game to continue without further disciplinary action.

Although Bogle’s challenge appeared particularly dangerous, the decision to keep him on the pitch remains a major talking point, especially following Hackett’s criticism.

The incident could have attracted even greater attention had Bogle gone on to score or provide the assist for Leeds’ winning goal, making the controversial decision even more significant.
