Andy Robertson has urged Tottenham Hotspur’s players to overcome fear and emotional pressure as Roberto De Zerbi’s side attempts to recover from a difficult opening to the Premier League season.
Tottenham currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table after picking up just two points from their first five matches. Despite spending more than £300 million on new players during a major summer rebuild, Spurs have struggled to find consistency, with a series of defeats and defensive mistakes leaving the squad short of confidence.
Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show, as reported by Last Word On Spurs on X, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson discussed the mental challenges Tottenham are facing. The Scotland international suggested that Spurs must learn to put previous disappointments behind them instead of allowing those setbacks to influence their performances in subsequent matches.
Robertson stressed the importance of Tottenham finding their confidence again and remaining composed when matches become difficult.
“We need to now try and get Tottenham back to where we believe they belong,” Robertson said, highlighting the need for the players to overcome the fear that appears to have affected their performances.
Robertson’s Comments Mirror De Zerbi’s Concerns
The Liverpool full-back’s comments come shortly after Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi openly discussed the mental fragility within his squad.
De Zerbi has admitted that his players have struggled to show enough resilience during difficult periods of matches. Spurs have often appeared vulnerable after conceding, with their tactical organisation and discipline deteriorating when opponents gain momentum.
That has become a major concern for the Italian manager, who must find a way to make his team more mentally resilient while also improving their performances on the pitch.
Tottenham’s current position makes the international break particularly important. With several players away on international duty, De Zerbi has been working with those remaining at Hotspur Way as the coaching staff focuses on physical preparation, tactical adjustments and rebuilding confidence.
However, injuries have created another problem for the manager. Pedro Porro is expected to miss around a month after suffering a hamstring injury, leaving Tottenham with another defensive concern ahead of their upcoming trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on October 10.
There have also been some positive developments. Dejan Kulusevski has returned to grass training, while Mohammed Kudus has remained in London to continue working on his physical condition.
For Tottenham, however, the biggest challenge may not simply be tactical or physical. The players must demonstrate greater composure when matches turn against them and avoid allowing pressure to dictate their decisions.
With the club currently fighting to move away from the bottom of the table, restoring confidence and maintaining discipline could prove crucial to De Zerbi’s attempts to turn Tottenham’s season around.
