In a bit of badly needed good news on the injury front, Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold is not expected to miss the start of the regular season according to NFL Network.
Arnold has repped exclusively with the first team since being taken 24th overall in the NFL draft, but suffered a pectoral injury during a one-on-one rep with Amon-Ra St. Brown on Monday night. Arnold was examined for several minutes on the sideline before returning to the locker room.
Fellow rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw (ankle) also went down later in the drill, leaving Detroit without its top two draft picks and some depth issues at cornerback. Emmanuel Moseley is already out for the long term because of a pectoral injury, while Carlton Davis also did not suit up for Monday’s practice due to an unknown issue.
The Lions signed cornerback Essang Bassey on Tuesday to help them navigate the injury issues in the defensive backfield, but the good news is their top draft pick is due back before Matthew Stafford comes to town for the season opener at Ford Field.
Other key injuries to watch this week will be running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who also left Monday’s practice with a hamstring injury, and quarterback Hendon Hooker, who hasn’t suited up since suffering a brain injury in the exhibition opener last week. Detroit returns to the practice field for a scrimmage on Wednesday morning, and continues the preseason on Saturday night in Kansas City.
