‘It Won’t Be Possible’ – Sunderland Boss Frank Over Clash With De Zerbi’s Tottenham

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has pointed to in-game adaptability as the crucial ingredient for his team ahead of their clash with a revamped Tottenham Hotspur side now led by Roberto De Zerbi.

Le Bris has overseen an impressive top-flight campaign since promotion, with the Black Cats securing 11 wins and reaching 43 points—comfortably steering clear of any immediate relegation concerns.

In contrast, Spurs have struggled throughout the season and sit just above West Ham United in the table. A turbulent managerial spell saw Thomas Frank dismissed in February, followed by Igor Tudor, who failed to win any of his five league matches before also being relieved of his duties.

De Zerbi now becomes Tottenham’s third manager of the campaign, returning to the Premier League after guiding Brighton & Hove Albion to historic European qualification in the 2022/23 season.

However, pundits like Simon Jordan and Richard Keys have questioned whether his appointment represents a top-tier choice.

The Italian will take charge of his first Spurs match on Sunday against a confident Sunderland side, fresh from a 2-1 derby victory over Newcastle United.

Le Bris admitted that preparing for the encounter has been particularly challenging due to the absence of any match footage under De Zerbi’s leadership.

While his general philosophy and the squad’s individual qualities are known, there is little concrete information on how Spurs will operate tactically.

As a result, the Sunderland boss stressed that the game will likely be decided by how well his players can adjust during the match rather than relying heavily on pre-game analysis.

He noted that while certain patterns in and out of possession can be anticipated, the lack of fresh tactical references makes real-time reactions essential.

Meanwhile, Pape Matar Sarr has returned to training after an injury sustained on international duty and could feature in De Zerbi’s first lineup.

Tottenham are still chasing their first win of the calendar year, placing added pressure on De Zerbi to deliver immediate results and steer the club away from danger.

However, they face a tough test against a Sunderland side that has won two of its last three matches and will be fully committed to putting in a strong performance at the Stadium of Light.
