Alex Morgan’s San Diego Wave are reportedly closing in on signing former Lyon star Delphine Cascarino on a free transfer.
- Cascarino left Lyon this summer
- France star a free agent ahead of Olympics
- Set to join Morgan’s San Diego Wave
The 27-year-old has spent her entire career at Lyon but on Tuesday, the French team announced her departure and tweeted: “Merci pour tout Delphine (Thank you for everything Delphine).” Now, CBS Sports state the winger, who can also play as a forward, will join the National Women’s Soccer League team San Diego Wave on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Cascarino is set to represent France at the Olympics but after that, she could move to the defending NWSL champions. While they won the league last season, this term they are 23 points off leaders Orlando Pride and sit 10th in the table. Signing the Frenchwoman could be a much-needed boost, but could also potentially provide competition for veteran USWNT legend Morgan.
Cascarino has won 64 caps for her country and scored 14 goals since making her debut since 2016. During her time at Lyon she won nine Division 1 Feminine titles, six Coupe de France trophies, two Trophee des Championnes and six Champions Leagues.
While Morgan’s San Diego side take on Club America in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup on July 26, Cascarino and France begin their Olympics campaign against Colombia on Thursday night. They also have New Zealand and reigning gold medallists Canada in their group.
