Cristian Romero’s injury timeline revealed: Tottenham captain may have played his final game

There has been a fresh update regarding the severity of Cristian Romero’s injury after the Tottenham defender was forced off during the second half of their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.

The Spurs captain was visibly emotional as he left the field, following a painful collision where his knee struck the side of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky’s face. The incident occurred after Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey unintentionally pushed Romero into the goalkeeper’s path.

Speaking after the match, Roberto De Zerbi stressed how crucial Romero is to Tottenham’s survival hopes, especially with only six league fixtures remaining in their battle to avoid relegation.

However, the Italian manager has now received worrying news just a day after taking charge. Reports from Argentine journalist Martin Arevalo confirm that scans have revealed a knee injury for the 27-year-old defender.

According to the diagnosis, Romero is expected to be out of action for between five and eight weeks. This timeline could rule him out for the remainder of Tottenham’s season, with their final league match scheduled for May 24 against Everton.

Despite the setback for Spurs, there is a silver lining for Argentina. Romero is expected to recover in time for the World Cup, boosting his national team’s chances as they prepare to defend their title.

Arevalo shared on X that while the injury is a blow at club level, it is positive news for Argentina, as one of their key players should be fit in time for the tournament.

If Romero does miss the rest of the campaign, the match against Sunderland may prove to be his final appearance for Tottenham. Speculation continues to grow over his future, with several top European clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.

Adding to the uncertainty, Romero’s father recently revealed that the defender has a release clause in his contract, believed to be between $50 million and $70 million (£37.8m–£53m), which could be activated this summer.
