Tottenham Hotspur have been accused of “arrogance” after their relegation worries deepened on Sunday.

The North London club remain in the Premier League’s bottom three following a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, where Nordi Mukiele’s second-half strike deflected in off Micky van de Ven—handing new manager Roberto De Zerbi a losing start.

Van de Ven was in tears at the final whistle as Spurs sat 18th, two points from safety with six games left, fighting to avoid a first relegation in 49 years.

Cristian Romero was also seen crying after limping off injured following a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, replaced by Kevin Danso in the 70th minute.

TalkSPORT’s Abbi Summers, a self-confessed Tottenham fan, launched a furious rant on talkSPORT Goals, targeting Romero, Van de Ven, and the club’s board. She said: “I’ve seen Romero cry, I’ve seen Van de Ven cry.

Where has that been all season? Has it just dawned on you, with six games left, that you’re sending this club down? The captain’s crying now—but not when he was getting sent off and missing seven games. Van de Ven couldn’t defend one-on-one for weeks.

Now you’re crying because you realise you might go down? None of you have given a toss all season. You’ve been arrogant, dismissing Thomas Frank, showing up late to training. Now your backs are against the wall and you’ve got no quality.”

Romero has missed six league matches through suspension this season (two reds, nine yellows). Van de Ven has faced criticism for his attitude, including appearing to snub Frank earlier in the campaign and ignoring interim boss Igor Tudor’s instructions.

Summers added: “That arrogance is disgraceful. People said, ‘Tottenham are too good to go down.’ We’ve sleepwalked into this—the board sleepwalked, arrogantly not bringing anyone in January, not helping Frank. I’ll always say Frank was never the right coach.

The way he set up against Chelsea and Arsenal was a sackable offence in November. They kept him too long—should have gone before Christmas. They didn’t sack him until mid-February, left it too late, then brought in Tudor.

What was the point? Tottenham have had this arrogance: ‘We’ll be fine because we’re Tottenham.’”

Spurs are now on their third manager of the season, still winless in the Premier League in 2025. Their last league win came on December 28 against Crystal Palace.

The current 14-match winless run is their second-longest in history; two more without victory would equal the club record of 16 (December 1934 – April 1935). Next, Spurs host De Zerbi’s former club Brighton on Saturday, then travel to bottom side Wolves.
