Tottenham youngster who idolises Chelsea legend sends Roberto De Zerbi brilliant message

Roberto De Zerbi could bolster Tottenham Hotspur next season by promoting one of the Championship’s brightest young talents, Ashley Phillips.

The young defender has been shortlisted for the Championship Young Player of the Season after an impressive second loan spell at Stoke City.

Phillips has stood out as one of the most consistent performers in the league, featuring 36 times and playing more minutes than any outfield player aged 20 or under.

His contributions have been key to Stoke boasting one of the division’s strongest defensive records, with only Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough conceding fewer goals.

Signed from Blackburn Rovers for just £3million in 2023, the England Under-21 international—who is also eligible for Wales—has developed rapidly. He is nominated for the award alongside Jordan James of Leicester City, Sydie Peck of Sheffield United, and Bobby Clark of Derby County. The winner will be announced at the EFL Awards on April 19.

Although De Zerbi has only recently arrived, he is likely to be encouraged by Phillips’ progress. When the defender returns to north London this summer, he will be aiming to break into the first team under the new manager.

Back in February, Phillips admitted he would be open to extending his stay at Stoke, praising the club for playing a major role in his development. He spoke highly of the fans, staff, and environment, saying it feels like home despite being on loan.

The 20-year-old has also been working closely with Spurs loan manager Andy Scoulding, who regularly checks in on his progress.

Phillips believes he has improved significantly but remains determined to keep developing, emphasizing the importance of experience for a centre-back. With over 100 senior appearances already, he sees this as just the beginning.

While he is yet to score this season, Phillips has ambitions to add goals to his game, taking inspiration from John Terry. He hopes to start converting his chances soon, with encouragement from Stoke coach Ryan Shawcross pushing him to improve further.
