Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle and Tottenham set for battle to sign £52m Man United midfielder

Manchester United are preparing for major changes in midfield when the summer transfer window opens, with the club keen to reshape their options in the centre of the pitch.

With Champions League football on the horizon, strengthening this area has become a top priority under Michael Carrick.

One confirmed exit is Casemiro, who has already announced he will leave when his contract expires. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte could also be on his way out, meaning United may need to bring in at least two new midfielders.

Despite struggling since his £52m move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, Ugarte is attracting interest. He has fallen down the pecking order, with Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro preferred in midfield.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are both keen on signing Ugarte. Other clubs, including Galatasaray, are also monitoring his situation, with talks already underway over a potential departure.

Aston Villa have also been linked, suggesting United may not struggle to find a buyer for the 24-year-old.

There is also a possibility of a swap deal involving Sandro Tonali, who is currently United’s top midfield target. With Newcastle interested in Ugarte and Tonali reportedly keen on Champions League football, a deal could suit all parties.

However, Newcastle are believed to value Tonali at around £100m. To reduce that fee, United could include Ugarte as part of the deal, helping them secure their target while also offloading a player who appears surplus to requirements.

In short, with multiple departures likely and several targets identified, United’s midfield could look very different by the start of next season.
