Lucas Perri’s revealing Jarrod Bowen penalty admission after Leeds United FA Cup heroics
Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas Perri emerged as the hero against West Ham United, making two crucial saves in the penalty shootout to send his side through to Wembley.
The Brazilian relied on a mix of preparation and instinct in Leeds’ 4-2 shootout victory after a dramatic 2-2 draw in their FA Cup quarter-final. He had been on course for a clean sheet with Leeds leading 2-0 heading into the 90th minute, only for West Ham to score twice during a chaotic spell of added time.
There was another scare in extra time when Taty Castellanos thought he had put West Ham ahead, but his effort was ruled out for offside—much to Perri’s relief. The £16 million signing had already justified his performance with several key saves before that moment.
In the shootout, Perri recovered after Joel Piroe saw his weak penalty saved, stepping up to deny Jarrod Bowen and then Pablo Felipe. Successful spot-kicks from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson, Willy Gnonto, and Pascal Struijk secured a semi-final clash with Chelsea.
Speaking after the match, Perri described the game as unforgettable. He revealed that his save from Bowen came from detailed analysis, while the others were based purely on instinct. He also praised the supporters, calling their passion “incredible” and expressing pride in representing the club.
The match also marked a memorable debut for young West Ham goalkeeper Finlay Herrick, who came on during extra time after Alphonse Areola was injured. Herrick, previously on loan at Boreham Wood, managed to save Piroe’s penalty but couldn’t stop Leeds from progressing.
Perri had kind words for the youngster, saying the experience would stay with him for life and highlighting his potential despite the defeat.
With the victory secured, Leeds can now look ahead to their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Chelsea. While Perri admitted the team would celebrate the achievement, he emphasized the importance of focusing on upcoming Premier League fixtures before preparing for the next big challenge.
